Martin Sheriff Release Role
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office operates from the Governmental Center in Williamston. It is a law-enforcement records and routing agency. It is explicitly not a confinement facility, and the office at 305 E. Main Street must not be called the Martin County Jail. Adult county detainees are normally held at Bertie–Martin Regional Jail in Windsor, which is governed by a regional jail commission. The Sheriff can create an arrest report, transport record, service record, or related agency file, while the regional jail creates the core booking, custody, transfer, and physical release record.
This division controls where an inquiry goes. Ask the Sheriff about a Martin arrest, transport, and the office’s own records. Ask the regional jail whether the person was physically discharged, the exact date and time, the release or transfer disposition, and the destination. Ask the Martin Clerk for the bond order, dismissal, judgment, sentence, or other court authority. “No longer in Windsor” is not enough because a person may have entered NCDAC, moved to another jail, or remained held by another authority.

A release check should follow the record rather than the county name alone. The quickest route begins with the last confirmed custodian. If the person was held as a local detainee, the Bertie–Martin Regional Jail release record is the first custody source. The Sheriff becomes relevant when its deputies made the arrest, transported the person, served process, or created another law-enforcement record tied to the case.
- Call the regional jail with the full legal name, date of birth, approximate booking date, and case or booking number. Ask community release versus transfer.
- Contact the Sheriff for its arrest or transport record and for help identifying the proper records custodian.
- Check North Carolina eCourts for the Register of Actions, bond event, disposition, judgment, and sentence. Request a signed or certified order from the Clerk when exact proof matters.
- If the person entered state custody, switch to NCDAC Offender Public Information Search and the monthly Inmate Release Search.
- Use NC SAVAN or VINELink only as a status and notification cross-check, not as the sole historical release record.
A court order explains legal authority, but the jail entry and release summary shows when staff carried it out. The Sheriff’s transport record may connect those points, particularly when a person moved between agencies. Keep each record in its proper role.
Note: A transfer ends custody at one place but does not release the person from all custody or supervision.

Named officials and routing addresses can change, so the live official page should be checked before sending time-sensitive material. The Williamston office keeps weekday business hours. It does not publish release-processing hours because it is not the jail.

The captured page supports the Sheriff contact route and the absence of a local release feed. Its state offender link does not turn the office into a jail or the state database into a Martin County roster.
Request Martin Sheriff Release Records
Use a focused request for records the Sheriff may actually hold. Name the person and event, give the approximate arrest or transport date, and add the Martin case number when known. Ask for a defined arrest report, transport log, service record, or routing information. If the goal is the physical entry and release summary, say that the regional jail was the custodian and ask whether the Sheriff has a related copy or can identify the proper recipient.
The Martin County Citizens Request Center offers “Sheriff” as a department choice. It collects the requester’s first and last name, email, phone, issue, department, and preferred email or phone response.
The form provides an official online route but posts no release-record price or response deadline. Request electronic delivery, ask for an estimate before accepting a large charge, and ask the agency to identify the basis for any withholding or redaction. North Carolina Chapter 132 permits reasonable-time inspection and prompt copies after authorized fees, while protected investigative, juvenile, sealed, expunged, medical, and personal data can remain restricted.
Martin Sheriff Search Limits
The Sheriff’s official site does not publish a local jail roster, booking archive, 24-hour release list, 72-hour release list, or released-mugshot gallery. Its offender-search path leads to NCDAC’s statewide Public Offender Search. NCDAC covers state prisoners, probationers, and parolees and expressly excludes city and county jail records. A blank state result therefore says nothing conclusive about a person who was held only at Bertie–Martin Regional Jail.
Likewise, an inactive NCDAC result is not proof of a Martin jail release. It belongs to a state offender episode. A person physically released from prison may still appear as an active probationer or parolee during community supervision. The date, institution, incarceration episode, and supervision record must match before the result is used. Martin Sheriff and Clerk Records
The Sheriff and Martin County Clerk of Superior Court share the Governmental Center street address in Williamston, but they preserve different records. The Sheriff can document an arrest or transport. The Clerk preserves the case file and court order. The physical jail remains in Windsor. That split means an exact release answer often needs one Williamston record to explain the legal authority and one Windsor record to show the actual custody exit.
Use the North Carolina eCourts Portal with Martin as the location and inspect the criminal case’s Register of Actions, disposition, bond events, judgment, and sentence. A dismissal may not produce immediate release if another hold exists. A closed case may not mean the sentence is finished. Expunction adds another limit. An expunction removes qualifying public court entries and seals or destroys specified state records. A missing result after expunction does not prove there was never a custody event. Public-facing records must not recreate sealed details.

Confirm Martin Release Across Systems
Some Martin-connected cases leave the local path. If the regional jail transferred the person to NCDAC, use the offender number and state episode. Check “All,” then “Inactive,” and review active probationer or parolee status because release from prison may lead to supervision rather than final discharge. NC SAVAN or VINELink can report a custody change for a named person and can send future alerts. Interpret any released or out-of-custody label only for the agency shown. A transfer can cause a status change without community release. The NCSBI registry is relevant only for a person who has a legal duty to register and does not prove a release date.

ICE ODLS covers current and some recent ICE custody. A USMS pretrial release should be checked with the physical holding facility and federal court or USMS record. None of those systems confirms a release by the Martin Sheriff because the Sheriff does not operate a jail.
